How Much Caffeine Is in Matcha? (With Real Numbers)
The actual caffeine numbers for a bowl of matcha, a latte, and koicha — compared with coffee and steeped green tea, and what really moves the total.
The short version: a standard 2g bowl of matcha (usucha) carries roughly 60-70mg of caffeine — close to a single espresso shot, and less than most drip coffee. A 4g koicha bowl roughly doubles that, to 120-140mg. A matcha latte has the same caffeine as a plain bowl, because it starts from the same scoop of powder; the milk only changes the volume. And matcha carries meaningfully more caffeine than steeped green tea, because you drink the ground leaf itself instead of an infusion poured off it. How much caffeine is in a standard bowl of matcha?
Roughly 60-70mg for a 2g usucha bowl — the everyday, thin-whisked preparation most people mean when they say "a bowl of matcha."
That number sits in a similar range to a single espresso shot, which the USDA and most published references put at roughly 60-65mg. It is meaningfully less than a large drip coffee, where an 8oz cup commonly falls between 95 and 150mg, and specialty-size cups can run higher still. If you drink koicha — the thick, ceremonial preparation using around 4g of matcha to a small amount of water — the caffeine roughly scales with the powder, landing around 120-140mg.
The range exists because "matcha" is not one fixed thing. A scoop varies by chashaku and by hand, cultivars differ, and how a farm shades and processes the leaf shifts the number by single-digit percentages either way. Treat 60-70mg as the reliable planning figure for a normal bowl, not a promise printed to the milligram.
How does matcha compare to coffee, cup for cup?
Closer than most people expect, and the comparison depends entirely on which coffee you mean.
- Espresso (1oz shot): ~60-65mg — nearly identical to a matcha bowl.
- Drip coffee (8oz): ~95-150mg — noticeably more than a bowl.
- Cold brew (8oz): often 150-200mg or more, since it is typically brewed at higher coffee-to-water ratios.
- Matcha usucha (2g bowl): ~60-70mg.
- Matcha koicha (4g bowl): ~120-140mg.

Does a matcha latte have less caffeine than a straight bowl?
Not by default. A matcha latte at a café generally starts with the same 2g scoop of matcha, whisked with a small amount of hot water into a paste before milk goes in. The caffeine total travels with the powder, not the liquid — so a 12oz latte and a 2oz bowl made from the same scoop carry the same roughly 60-70mg. What changes is concentration per sip and how fast you drink it, not the total dose in the cup.
The one place this breaks is when a café is deliberately conservative with powder to control cost or bitterness — a thinner pour of matcha into a large cup will have less caffeine than a full scoop, simply because there is less leaf in the cup. If you want a predictable number, the powder amount is what to ask about, not the milk.
Iced versions follow the same logic: dilution with ice and cold milk changes taste and mouthfeel, not the milligrams already in the shaken matcha.
Why does matcha have so much more caffeine than steeped green tea?
Because steeping only extracts part of what is in the leaf, and matcha skips that limitation entirely.
When you steep sencha or another loose-leaf green tea, hot water pulls caffeine, catechins and amino acids out of the leaf and into the cup, and then you discard the leaf with a meaningful share of its content still inside it. An 8oz cup of steeped green tea typically comes in around 25-45mg of caffeine — a fraction of what the same weight of leaf actually contains.
Matcha is the ground leaf itself, whisked into suspension rather than steeped and strained. Essentially everything in that leaf — caffeine included — ends up in your bowl. That is the same reason matcha delivers more L-theanine and more of the leaf's other compounds per gram than a steeped cup ever could; it is simply more leaf, consumed whole.
What actually changes the caffeine content, leaf to leaf?
A handful of variables, and they move the number by degrees rather than by multiples.
Shading before harvest. Covering the field for roughly 20-30 days before picking is the defining step in growing tencha, the leaf that becomes matcha. Shaded leaf tends to test somewhat higher in both caffeine and L-theanine than sun-grown leaf, though theanine is the variable shading is really optimized for — we covered the mechanism in what tencha is.
Leaf age and position. The youngest leaves and buds near the top of the plant generally carry more caffeine than older, lower leaves and stems. Producers making matcha use only the top young leaf and remove stems and veins during processing, which is part of why matcha reads stronger than a tea made from coarser leaf.
Cultivar. Different tea cultivars carry genuinely different baseline caffeine levels, independent of how they're grown.
Harvest timing. Caffeine shifts modestly across the growing season along with a range of other compounds, but the swing here is smaller than what shading contributes — and it is far less noticeable on the tongue than the theanine and umami differences we described in our grading guide. We would rather you judge a matcha on taste and freshness than on an assumption about which pick tested highest.
Does grind size or water temperature change how much caffeine you get?
No, for a meaningfully different reason than it changes flavor.
Because matcha is a suspended whole leaf rather than an extraction, whatever caffeine is in the powder ends up in the bowl regardless of grind fineness or water temperature. Whisking at a gentler 80°C rather than boiling changes bitterness and mouthfeel — the technique we cover in how to whisk matcha — but it doesn't add or remove caffeine, because there's no extraction step to interfere with.
Freshness matters more than either of those for how the caffeine actually feels. A tin that's sat open on a shelf for months loses aromatic sharpness before it loses caffeine, so an older matcha can taste flat while still carrying its full dose — one more reason we print a harvest date and lot number on every tin, rather than asking you to guess.
