Matcha vs Coffee: What's Actually in the Cup
Caffeine, L-theanine, and EGCG — a straight comparison of matcha and coffee, with real numbers and no health promises we can't keep.
Every year around this time, someone asks us the same question: should I switch from coffee to matcha? Our honest answer is that it's the wrong question. The right one is: what do you want the next four hours to feel like?
How much caffeine is in each cup?
Here are the numbers, per typical serving:
| Drink | Caffeine |
|---|---|
| Steeped green tea | ~35mg |
| Black tea | ~47mg |
| Matcha (2g) | ~60-70mg |
| Espresso (1 shot) | ~63mg |
| Drip coffee (8oz) | ~95mg |
| Cold brew (16oz) | ~200mg |
Matcha sits in a deliberate middle: coffee-adjacent, not coffee-level. If you're pouring a 16oz cold brew every morning, matcha is a step down in raw caffeine — and for many people, that's precisely the point.
Why the same caffeine feels different
The difference isn't the dose. It's the company the caffeine keeps.
Matcha carries 20-45mg of L-theanine per serving — an amino acid that promotes alpha-wave activity in the brain. Research on the caffeine + L-theanine combination links it to calm, focused alertness: the caffeine still works, but the edges are softer. Coffee has no L-theanine at all.
We won't promise you "no crash" — bodies differ, and anyone who guarantees a feeling is selling something. What we can say is that the mechanism is real, and it's why matcha built its reputation among people who drink for focus rather than jolt.
The whole-leaf difference
With coffee, you brew and discard the grounds. With steeped tea, you steep and discard the leaves. With matcha, you drink the entire ground leaf — which is why a bowl carries 70-150mg of EGCG, the catechin that makes green tea interesting to researchers in the first place.
This is also why sourcing matters more for matcha than for almost any other drink: whatever was on the leaf ends up in your cup. It's the reason we work with certified organic tea farms in Kagoshima, and why every production bag we ship carries its harvest date and lot number.
So — switch, or not?
If coffee works for you, keep it. If you recognize yourself in any of these, matcha is worth a real trial:
- The 2pm crash is a daily event
- You want caffeine but your stomach has opinions about coffee
- You drink for focus — deep work, long meetings, creative sessions
- You've been cutting coffee back and miss having a ritual
Start with a simple test: make a proper matcha latte in the morning for one week and notice what your afternoons feel like. That comparison — run in your own body — beats anything we could tell you.
